Dharamshala/Shimla: The race for government jobs in Himachal Pradesh has reached a fever pitch with the upcoming HP Patwari Exam 2026. With reports of a staggering 18.87 lakh applications for a mere 530 vacancies, the competition is set to be one of the toughest in the state’s history.
To help aspirants navigate this challenge, Ajay K Saklanii, Editor-in-Chief of Enoxx News, hosted Gulshan Sir from Ewingz Academy, Dharamshala, on the second episode of the popular podcast series, “Shiksha Manthan.” The duo deep-dived into the exam pattern, syllabus, and the strategy required to secure a seat.
The Numbers Game: Survival of the Fittest The scale of the competition is unprecedented. With eligibility open to 12th-pass candidates aged 18-45, the applicant pool is massive. “Statistically, there are roughly 350+ candidates fighting for a single seat,” noted the experts. In such a scenario, mere knowledge isn’t enough; precision is everything.
Deciphering the Exam Pattern The exam will be a Computer Based Test (CBT) consisting of 120 Questions to be solved in just 90 minutes (1.5 hours). Gulshan Sir broke down the structure into two segments:
- Segment A (85 Questions): Covers General Studies (History, Geography, Polity, Economy, General Science) and Mathematics.
- Segment B (35 Questions): Focuses on Languages (Hindi & English), Reasoning, and Himachal GK.
Expert Insight: While Himachal-specific questions have seen a reduction in weightage recently, they remain crucial within the 35-question block alongside languages.
Strategy for Success: The ‘CBT’ Mindset The shift to a Computer Based Test changes the rules of engagement. Gulshan Sir emphasized that Reading Speed and Comprehension Skills are now the decisive factors. “In a CBT, you can’t just listen or memorize; you need to read fast and interpret data accurately on a screen,” he advised.
Key Preparation Tips from the Show:
- Back to Basics: Rely on NCERTs and standard reference books rather than just compilation guides. Build a strong foundation.
- The 55-Minute Rule: Adopt a disciplined study block of 55 minutes followed by a 10-15 minute break to maintain focus.
- Accuracy is King: In the final month, the goal should be 85-90% accuracy. Attempting more questions with low accuracy will be fatal.
- Mock Tests: Regular full-length mock tests are non-negotiable to adapt to the time pressure.
