Kochi: A sexual assault case has been registered against filmmaker Chidambaram, director of the Malayalam film Manjummel Boys, following a complaint lodged by a woman alleging misconduct. Police officials confirmed on Monday that a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed and that preliminary inquiries are in progress.
According to law enforcement authorities in Kerala, the complaint was submitted to the police earlier this week. The FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to sexual assault. Officers said statements from the complainant have been recorded and further procedural steps are being undertaken in accordance with the law.
A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity as the investigation is ongoing, stated that the accused has not yet been arrested and that notices may be issued for questioning. “We are examining the allegations and collecting evidence. The process will follow due procedure,” the official said.
Chidambaram, who gained national attention for directing Manjummel Boys, has not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication. Representatives associated with the filmmaker have also not issued an official statement.
The case has drawn attention within the Malayalam film industry, where discussions around workplace conduct and accountability have intensified in recent years. Industry bodies have not released formal comments but sources indicated that internal consultations may be held if the matter progresses further.
Manjummel Boys, released earlier this year, was both a critical and commercial success, earning praise for its storytelling and box office performance. The director’s rising profile had positioned him among emerging voices in contemporary Malayalam cinema.
Legal experts note that the registration of an FIR marks the beginning of a formal investigation but does not imply guilt. Under Indian law, the accused is presumed innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law. The investigative process typically involves gathering testimonies, examining evidence, and determining whether charges will be filed.
The allegations come amid broader conversations about sexual misconduct in India’s entertainment industry. Over the past decade, several high-profile cases have prompted calls for clearer grievance mechanisms and stronger compliance with workplace safety regulations. Film associations and production houses have increasingly adopted internal complaints committees in line with the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act.
Women’s rights advocates say that due process and confidentiality are essential in such cases to ensure fairness for both the complainant and the accused. “It is important that investigations are thorough and impartial,” said Anjana Menon, a Kochi-based legal consultant who has worked on workplace harassment cases. “The legal system must be allowed to function without external pressure.”
Public reaction on social media has been mixed, with some users calling for accountability and others urging restraint until facts are established. Police officials have appealed to the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed without interference.
Authorities have not disclosed specific details of the complaint, citing privacy concerns. It remains unclear when the alleged incident took place or whether it is connected to professional engagements.
If charges are eventually framed, the case could move to trial following judicial review. Legal proceedings in such matters can extend over several months or years depending on the complexity of evidence and court schedules.
For now, the focus remains on the investigative process. The Kerala Police reiterated that updates would be shared as appropriate once additional facts are verified.
The unfolding case underscores the continuing scrutiny faced by public figures and the evolving framework governing conduct within India’s film industry. As the investigation advances, stakeholders across the sector are likely to watch developments closely.
