THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, March 16: An Emirates flight heading to Dubai was forced to return to Thiruvananthapuram airport on Sunday after reports of a drone strike near Dubai International Airport led to the temporary suspension of flight operations.
According to aviation reports, the aircraft had already departed from Thiruvananthapuram when the situation unfolded near Dubai. Authorities briefly restricted air traffic at the airport as a precaution following the incident.
As a result, the Emirates flight was instructed to turn back and land safely at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport until normal operations resumed.
Airport Operations Temporarily Disrupted
Dubai International Airport, one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world, temporarily halted or delayed several flights after the reported drone incident. Aviation authorities took precautionary measures to ensure passenger safety while assessing the situation.
Officials said the disruption affected multiple inbound flights, some of which were diverted or asked to delay arrival until airport operations stabilized.
Passengers Safe, Flight Rescheduled
Airport authorities in Thiruvananthapuram confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and passengers were not harmed. The airline is expected to reschedule the flight once authorities in Dubai confirm that operations have fully resumed.
Airlines typically follow strict international aviation safety protocols when security incidents occur near airports, including diverting flights or returning aircraft to the origin airport.
Drone Incidents Raise Aviation Safety Concerns
Drone sightings or attacks near airports have increasingly raised security concerns for aviation authorities worldwide. Even small drones can pose significant risks to aircraft during takeoff and landing phases.
Authorities often suspend airspace operations temporarily when such incidents occur in order to assess the situation and ensure safe flight operations.
