NAVI MUMBAI — In a move set to redefine India’s logistics landscape, global transportation giant FedEx officially broke ground on its first fully automated air cargo hub at the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday.
The project, which represents a massive investment of over ₹2,500 crore, is being developed in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL). The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, FedEx President and CEO Raj Subramaniam, and Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings.
A Gateway to the World The new 300,000-square-foot facility is designed to be more than just a warehouse; it will serve as a critical regional consolidation and redistribution hub. Once operational, it will directly link Indian exporters to key markets in Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe, and the United States, significantly reducing transit times.
“India is a strategic priority for FedEx,” said Raj Subramaniam, President and CEO of FedEx. “This hub will help Indian businesses compete on a global scale by providing faster, more reliable access to international markets.”
Tech-Driven Logistics The facility promises to be a marvel of modern logistics. It will feature advanced automated sorting systems capable of processing thousands of packages per hour, high-speed security screening, and dedicated aircraft parking bays. This level of automation is expected to streamline customs clearance and cargo handling, addressing long-standing bottlenecks in Indian supply chains.
Boosting Local Economy Beyond trade, the project is a significant economic driver for the region. FedEx estimates that the hub will generate over 6,000 direct and indirect jobs across logistics, transportation, and warehousing sectors.
Jeet Adani highlighted the strategic advantage of the location, stating, “This development reflects NMIA’s vision of building integrated infrastructure. With proximity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port and industrial corridors, this hub will make Maharashtra a true global logistics gateway.”
The facility is expected to become operational in phases, aligning with the commercial opening of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, further cementing India’s position in the global supply chain.
