Shimla, March 11 — Several high-altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh received fresh snowfall while lower regions witnessed rainfall, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures across the state. The change in weather conditions was reported across districts including Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, and parts of Kullu, according to local meteorological observations.
Snowfall was recorded in higher mountain areas during the early hours, covering peaks and mountain passes with a fresh layer of snow. Meanwhile, many mid-hill and plain districts experienced intermittent rain, which contributed to colder daytime temperatures.
Snowfall in Higher Reaches
Mountain regions such as Keylong, Kaza and surrounding high-altitude areas reported light to moderate snowfall. Local residents said the snowfall has improved moisture levels in the region and is beneficial for glaciers and water resources that feed rivers across northern India.
Weather officials noted that such snowfall during the late winter and early spring period often plays an important role in maintaining water reserves in the Himalayan region.
Temperature Drop Across the State
The rainfall and snowfall led to a decline in temperatures in several districts including Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie. The weather change also brought cloudy conditions and cold winds to many areas.
Meteorological officials said that night temperatures in some higher locations dropped close to freezing levels, while day temperatures remained lower than seasonal averages.
Impact on Tourism and Travel
Fresh snowfall often attracts tourists to Himachal’s hill destinations, particularly Shimla, Manali, Kufri and Solang Valley. Local tourism operators said visitors frequently travel to the state following snowfall announcements to experience winter conditions in the mountains.
However, authorities also advised travelers to remain cautious while driving in higher altitude areas where roads may become slippery due to snow accumulation.
Weather Outlook
Meteorological officials indicated that weather conditions could remain partly cloudy in some regions over the coming days. Additional light precipitation in higher reaches cannot be ruled out depending on the movement of western disturbances affecting the Himalayan belt.
Weather experts say such systems typically bring snowfall to higher elevations and rain to lower areas during late winter.
The fresh snowfall and rainfall are expected to support water availability and help maintain ecological balance in the mountainous state.
