Shimla, March 10 — The Himachal Pradesh Milk Federation has announced plans to establish six new milk processing plants across the state, a move expected to strengthen the dairy sector and increase income opportunities for local milk producers. The project, estimated to cost around ₹400 crore, is aimed at expanding milk processing capacity and improving procurement infrastructure in rural areas.
According to officials associated with the federation, the proposed plants will help ensure better collection, storage and processing of milk produced by farmers in different districts. Authorities believe the expansion will address existing capacity constraints and enable the cooperative network to handle higher milk volumes in the coming years.
Expansion of Dairy Infrastructure
The initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to strengthen the dairy economy and improve market access for small and marginal farmers. By increasing the number of processing facilities, the federation aims to reduce transportation challenges and ensure quicker collection of milk from remote areas.
Officials said the new plants are expected to be equipped with modern processing and storage systems, allowing the federation to produce a wider range of dairy products, including packaged milk, butter, ghee and other value-added items.
The federation leadership noted that improving dairy infrastructure is essential to support farmers who rely on milk production as a secondary source of income.
Support for Milk Producers
Himachal Pradesh has a large number of small-scale dairy farmers who supply milk through cooperative societies linked to the state federation. Expanding processing capacity could allow the federation to procure more milk from farmers and offer them better returns.
Officials indicated that the planned plants would help strengthen the cooperative supply chain, making it easier for producers in rural areas to deliver milk to collection centres.
Industry observers say that improving milk procurement systems can play an important role in stabilizing rural incomes, particularly in hill states where agricultural options are limited.
Growing Demand for Dairy Products
Demand for packaged milk and dairy products has been steadily rising in Himachal Pradesh as well as neighboring states. Expanding processing capacity will help the federation meet increasing demand while maintaining quality and supply consistency.
Experts believe that investments in dairy infrastructure can help rural economies by creating employment opportunities in milk collection, processing, transportation and marketing.
Looking Ahead
The federation is expected to finalize locations and implementation plans for the six new plants in the coming months. Once completed, the facilities are likely to strengthen Himachal’s dairy cooperative network and improve access to markets for thousands of milk producers across the state.
Officials say the expansion reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to promote cooperative agriculture and strengthen rural livelihoods through the dairy sector.
