New Delhi, March 12 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday dismissed concerns about a nationwide shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), saying there is adequate supply in the country and alleging that some individuals are attempting to spread panic about the availability of cooking gas.
Speaking during a review of energy supply and distribution, the Prime Minister urged state governments and administrative authorities to strengthen monitoring of LPG distribution systems to ensure uninterrupted delivery to consumers.
Officials said the government has asked state authorities to keep a close watch on supply chains and retail distribution networks, particularly in areas where rumours about shortages have recently surfaced.
Government response to shortage concerns
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid reports in some regions about delays in LPG cylinder deliveries and concerns among consumers about possible supply disruptions.
According to government sources, India’s domestic LPG supply chain remains stable and the country maintains adequate reserves to meet household demand. Authorities emphasised that any localised delays are usually caused by logistical issues rather than a shortage of fuel.
Officials have also directed state governments to coordinate with oil marketing companies to ensure that cylinders are supplied smoothly and that misinformation does not trigger unnecessary panic buying.
Importance of LPG in household energy
LPG remains one of the most widely used cooking fuels in India, particularly after the expansion of government welfare initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which has provided subsidised LPG connections to millions of households.
Energy experts note that any perception of shortage can lead to sudden spikes in demand, disrupting supply chains even when overall stocks remain adequate.
The government therefore emphasised the need for transparent communication and close monitoring to prevent speculation or rumours from affecting the distribution system.
States asked to enhance monitoring
Prime Minister Modi also asked state governments to remain vigilant and respond quickly to reports of irregular supply or hoarding.
Authorities said that ensuring the smooth availability of LPG is critical for household energy security, especially in rural and low-income communities that rely heavily on subsidised cylinders for daily cooking.
Officials added that the Centre and states will continue working with oil companies to maintain stable supplies and prevent any artificial disruption in distribution.
