SHIMLA: The wait is finally over. After months of a dry spell that had farmers and tourists anxious, the heavens opened up across North India on Friday. Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and parts of Uttarakhand received their first significant snowfall of the season, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.
While tourists are rushing to hill stations for the weekend, the real celebration is happening in the apple orchards of the state, where this snow is seen as “White Manure.”
Holly Lodge Turns Into a Snow Castle
The mood of the state was perfectly captured by Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vikramaditya Singh. Early this morning, he took to social media to share breathtaking pictures from his private residence, the historic Holly Lodge in Shimla.

The images showed the iconic estate covered in a thick layer of pristine white snow, with pine trees bowing under the weight of the fresh fall. For many locals, the sight of a snow-covered Holly Lodge is a nostalgic signal that “real winter” has arrived in the Queen of Hills. The photos instantly went viral, drawing comments from across the country as people marveled at the scenic beauty of the state capital.
A Lifeline for Agriculture and Horticulture
While the snow is a visual treat, for the state’s economy, it is a lifeline. The prolonged dry spell had raised alarms among apple growers in Shimla, Kullu, and Kinnaur. Apple trees require a specific number of “Chilling Hours” (temperatures below 7°C) to break dormancy and ensure a healthy flowering season.

- The “White Manure”: Experts call this snow “White Manure” because it melts slowly, allowing the soil to absorb moisture deep into the roots. This slow percolation is far more beneficial than rain, which often runs off the steep slopes.
- Drought Relief: The snow has provided immediate relief to the wheat and barley crops in the lower hills, which were on the verge of withering due to the lack of winter rain.
Orange Alert and Road Closures
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for heavy snowfall in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Lahaul-Spiti. Travelers are advised to drive with caution as major roads, including the Manali-Leh highway and internal roads in upper Shimla (Kufri, Narkanda), may face temporary closures due to slippery conditions.

Tourism Boom Expected
Hoteliers are reporting a surge in inquiries for the upcoming Republic Day long weekend. With the fresh snowfall, occupancy rates in Shimla and Manali are expected to hit 100%, providing a much-needed boost to the hospitality sector that had suffered due to the dry winter.
