UNA, March 16: Around 60 sheep and goats were killed after being struck by a train in Himachal Pradesh’s Una district on Sunday, officials said. The incident occurred when a flock belonging to a local shepherd came onto the railway track while moving through the area.
According to reports, the accident took place near a railway section in Una when the animals were crossing the track. Before the shepherd could move the flock away, a passing train hit the animals, resulting in the deaths of dozens of sheep and goats.
Local residents and railway officials reached the site after the incident and helped clear the track. The animals reportedly belonged to a shepherd who was moving the flock through the area when the accident occurred.
Shepherd Suffers Heavy Loss
Authorities said the shepherd suffered a significant financial loss as a large portion of his flock was killed in the incident. Local officials have been informed and a report about the accident has been prepared.
Residents of the area said that shepherds often move flocks through nearby paths while grazing animals, and railway crossings without barriers sometimes pose risks when animals stray onto tracks.
Investigation and Local Response
Railway officials said the incident appeared accidental and occurred when the animals suddenly came onto the railway track. The train was unable to stop in time after the flock entered the track.
Local administration and railway authorities are expected to review safety measures in the area to prevent similar incidents in the future.
