Nahan, March 14 — A pregnant woman delivered a baby girl inside a moving Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus in Sirmaur district on Friday evening while she was being taken to hospital for treatment. Both the mother and the newborn are reported to be in stable condition after being admitted to Dr. Y.S. Parmar Government Medical College and Hospital in Nahan.
According to local reports, the woman, identified as Saroj, was travelling with her husband and mother-in-law on a bus operating on the Kunhat–Haripurdhar–Renukaji–Nahan route. The family had boarded the bus near Malgaon to reach the medical college in Nahan for delivery.
The bus departed from Dadahu for Nahan around 7 pm as per its schedule. Saroj and her family were seated on the rear seat of the bus during the journey.
Labour pain intensified during the journey
During the journey, the woman’s labour pain intensified after the bus crossed Jamta and reached near Dosadka. Witnesses said she began experiencing severe pain, prompting other passengers to respond quickly.
Male passengers moved to the front section of the bus to create space, while several women gathered around Saroj to assist her. Within a short time, she delivered a baby girl on the rear seat of the bus.
A woman passenger immediately informed emergency services by calling the 108 ambulance helpline. Meanwhile, the bus driver continued driving toward Nahan to ensure quick medical assistance.

Shifted to hospital by ambulance
Near Banog, the bus was stopped and the mother and newborn were transferred to the waiting ambulance. They were then taken to Dr. Y.S. Parmar Government Medical College and Hospital in Nahan for further medical care.
Doctors at the hospital confirmed that both the mother and the baby were healthy. According to Dr. Amod Singh, head of the gynaecology department, the woman delivered a healthy baby girl at around 8:15 pm inside the bus.
Delivery occurred earlier than expected
Sources said the woman had travelled toward the hospital as a precaution even though her expected delivery date was still some time away. However, labour began unexpectedly during the journey.
The child is reportedly her second baby. Passengers later said the situation unfolded quickly, leaving little time to reach the hospital before the delivery occurred.
Rural travel realities
The incident highlights the challenges faced by many residents in remote areas of Himachal Pradesh, where people often rely on public transport to reach hospitals located in district towns. HRTC buses remain a key lifeline connecting villages to healthcare facilities and essential services across the state.
Medical officials said both mother and child are under observation and doing well. Hospital authorities are expected to discharge them once routine post-delivery checks are completed.
