As winter tightens its grip, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today warned of an impending cold wave that is set to sweep across North and Central India. The advisory, released on 16 November, predicts a significant fall in minimum temperatures in states like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, a cold wave has already begun affecting parts of the region, with temperatures expected to drop 3–5 degrees Celsius below average in several cities. The department cautions that the chill could be more severe in rural and open areas, increasing the risk for vulnerable populations such as children, elderly, and those without adequate shelter.
Authorities across affected states have advised residents to stay indoors during late night and early morning hours, wear appropriate clothing, and ensure warmth especially for children and senior citizens. In addition, homeless shelters are being prepared and local bodies are coordinating to provide relief to those at highest risk.
Weather experts attribute the present cold spell to strong northwesterly winds and a combination of meteorological factors that enhance radiative cooling. Schools and other institutions in certain districts may revise schedules to ensure student safety, while health departments are on alert for cold-related illnesses.
This cold wave marks the first significant winter event of the season in Northern and Central India, reminding residents to be prepared for the season ahead.
