Emraan Hashmi is known for playing unconventional roles, and he isn’t holding back his thoughts on his colleagues. The actor recently stated that Bollywood is currently dominated by the “hyper-masculine” trope because that is exactly what the audience wants to buy tickets for. Referring to the film Animal, he mentioned that many men identified with the character, which led to its record-breaking success despite the “woke” backlash.
Hashmi further challenged the male actors of Bollywood to shed their insecurities. He noted that while he was happy to play second fiddle in Vidya Balan’s The Dirty Picture, many stars today demand a “victory” in every script. He concluded by expressing a need for more women-led stories, even if the current market makes them difficult to produce.
