Shimla, March 10 — Kavinder Gupta took oath as the 30th Governor of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Shimla. With his swearing-in, the hill state has now seen a total of 30 governors since attaining full statehood in 1971.
The Governor serves as the constitutional head of the state, representing the President of India and ensuring that governance functions in accordance with the Constitution. Since Himachal Pradesh became the 18th state of India on January 25, 1971, several distinguished administrators, politicians and public figures have held the office.
Beginning of the Governor’s Office in Himachal
When Himachal Pradesh became a full state in 1971, S. Chakravarti was appointed as the first Governor. His tenure marked the start of the gubernatorial institution in the state’s administrative structure.
The role of the Governor includes overseeing the legislative process, appointing the Chief Minister, and ensuring constitutional governance. Over the decades, many governors have played significant roles during key political and administrative transitions in the state.

After S. Chakravarti, several experienced administrators and political leaders took charge as Governor.

Kavinder Gupta Becomes the 30th Governor
With his oath on March 10, 2026, Kavinder Gupta became the 30th Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
Before this appointment, Gupta served as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh and earlier held important political roles in Jammu and Kashmir, including Speaker of the Assembly and Deputy Chief Minister.
Observers note that his administrative experience across different regions may help strengthen coordination between the state government and the Union government.
Constitutional Importance of the Governor
Although the Governor’s role is largely ceremonial, the office plays an important constitutional function. The Governor must ensure that the state government operates within the framework of the Constitution and can also act as a key link between the Centre and the state.
Over the past five decades, the Raj Bhavan in Shimla has witnessed numerous political transitions, government formations and legislative developments.
With Kavinder Gupta assuming office, the institution continues its role in overseeing constitutional governance in Himachal Pradesh as the state moves through its next phase of political and administrative development.
