Shimla, March 10 — Several parts of Himachal Pradesh are expected to experience rain and snowfall over the next six days as a fresh western disturbance moves across the western Himalayan region, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system may also trigger thunderstorms and isolated hailstorms in some districts.
Meteorological officials said the change in weather conditions is likely to begin soon and may continue through mid-March, affecting both higher altitude regions and mid-hill areas. The forecast indicates that light to moderate rain is expected in many parts of the state, while higher reaches may witness snowfall.
Western Disturbance Driving Weather Change
According to the IMD’s latest weather bulletin, the approaching western disturbance is expected to influence weather conditions across the western Himalayan belt. As a result, Himachal Pradesh could see intermittent rain or snowfall in several districts between March 10 and March 15.
Weather experts say such disturbances typically originate over the Mediterranean region and move eastward, bringing moisture and unstable atmospheric conditions to northern India. This often results in precipitation in hill states including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.
Thunderstorm and Hailstorm Alert
The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds in isolated areas during the forecast period. In some places, hailstorms may occur, particularly during intense convective activity.
Officials have advised residents, farmers and tourists to stay alert, especially in regions where sudden weather changes can disrupt travel or agricultural activities. Hailstorms can cause damage to crops, orchards and infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
Possible Impact on Tourism and Agriculture
The expected spell of rain and snowfall may have mixed effects across the state. While fresh snowfall in higher altitude destinations such as Kufri, Manali and nearby areas could attract tourists, persistent rainfall may disrupt road travel and outdoor activities.
Agricultural experts say precipitation during this period can benefit certain crops and horticulture, particularly apple orchards that rely on winter and early spring moisture. However, hailstorms or strong winds could pose a risk to standing crops in some regions.
Temperature Likely to Drop
Meteorological officials also expect a gradual drop in temperatures across parts of the state as cloud cover increases and precipitation occurs. In hill regions, minimum temperatures could fall further if snowfall intensifies.
Weather conditions are expected to remain variable through the week, with authorities continuing to monitor the system closely.
Officials have advised residents and travelers to follow regular weather updates, particularly those planning journeys to higher altitude areas where snowfall could affect road connectivity.
