Shimla, March 13 — The Meteorological Department has forecast a fresh spell of unsettled weather across Himachal Pradesh from March 15 to March 18, with the possibility of rain, snowfall and thunderstorms in many parts of the state.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a western disturbance is expected to influence weather conditions across the western Himalayan region during this period. As a result, several districts of Himachal Pradesh may experience rainfall in lower areas and snowfall in higher altitude regions.
Weather officials said that the impact of the system will be felt across most parts of the state, including Shimla, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangra and Kinnaur.
Rain and snowfall likely in higher reaches
The forecast indicates that light to moderate rain is likely in many districts, while snowfall may occur in high-altitude areas such as Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and parts of Chamba and Kullu.
Meteorologists have also warned of the possibility of thunderstorms and strong winds in some areas during the weather system. Authorities said localised disruptions to traffic or daily activities cannot be ruled out, particularly in hill districts where sudden weather changes are common.

Western disturbance influencing weather
Weather experts explained that western disturbances frequently bring precipitation to the western Himalayan region during late winter and early spring. These systems originate over the Mediterranean region and move eastward, affecting states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.
Such disturbances are an important source of precipitation in the mountains and contribute to snow accumulation in higher elevations.
Impact on agriculture and travel
Agricultural experts noted that the expected precipitation may benefit horticulture and rabi crops, particularly apple orchards and wheat fields that require moisture during this period.
However, authorities have advised residents and travellers to remain cautious in higher altitude areas where snowfall could affect road connectivity. Tourist movement may also be impacted if snowfall occurs in popular hill destinations.
Advisory issued for residents
The Meteorological Department has advised people to stay updated with weather bulletins and follow instructions issued by local authorities. Drivers travelling on mountain roads have been urged to take necessary precautions during periods of rain or snowfall.
Officials said the weather system is expected to weaken gradually after March 18, which may lead to an improvement in weather conditions across the state.
