Shimla, March 15 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for thunderstorms and hailstorms in parts of Himachal Pradesh as the state is expected to experience rainfall and unstable weather conditions for the next six days.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, a fresh western disturbance is likely to influence weather patterns across the hill state. The system may trigger intermittent rain, thunderstorms and lightning in several districts beginning mid-March.
Thunderstorms and hailstorms forecast
Weather officials have warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail and gusty winds could affect many parts of the state during this period. The orange alert indicates the possibility of severe weather conditions, urging residents and local authorities to remain cautious.
The advisory suggests that districts in mid and higher hill regions could witness intense weather activity. The forecast includes strong winds and localized hailstorms, which may disrupt normal life and damage crops in some areas.
The IMD has advised farmers, orchardists and residents in vulnerable areas to monitor weather updates and take precautionary measures.

Rain likely across multiple districts
Rainfall activity is expected to spread across several districts including Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Kangra, Chamba, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and parts of Sirmaur and Solan. Higher altitude areas may also experience snowfall if temperatures drop during the system’s peak activity.
Meteorologists said that western disturbances frequently bring such weather changes to the Himalayan region during the late winter and early spring months.
These systems originate in the Mediterranean region and move eastwards, bringing moisture and precipitation to northern India, particularly hill states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Impact on agriculture and travel
The expected rain and hailstorms could have mixed impacts across the state. While rainfall may provide moisture beneficial for certain crops and water sources, hailstorms and strong winds can damage fruit orchards and standing crops, particularly apple and vegetable cultivation areas.
Officials also cautioned that thunderstorms and gusty winds could lead to temporary disruptions in road connectivity in mountainous regions.
Tourists and travellers planning to visit hill stations have been advised to stay updated on local weather conditions and follow official advisories.
Changing weather patterns in spring
March often marks the transition period between winter and early summer in Himachal Pradesh. During this time, western disturbances can bring sudden weather changes including rain, snowfall in higher reaches and occasional hailstorms.
Meteorologists say the current spell of wet weather may continue intermittently through the coming week before clearer conditions return.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert during thunderstorms and avoid open areas during lightning activity.
